| Civic Leadership Training
Council, Wyandotte
County Kansas
From its origins in 1985, the purpose of the Civic
Leadership Training Council has been to develop the leadership potential
of men and women in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Its flagship program,
Leadership 2000, was created to identify, motivate and develop 2,000 new
and emerging community leaders to help shape our community's future.
Leadership 2000 classes are made up of individuals with diverse
backgrounds who have demonstrated an interest in and a commitment to
civic leadership. Through this program participants become aware of
social and economic changes and the impact of such changes upon the
local economy.
Establishment of the Civic Leadership Training Council was a response to
the desire for more people to engage in the process of addressing
important community issues rather than depending upon the same decision
makers to do so. However, Leadership 2000 participants do not wait until
after graduation to engage in this process. Each class participates in a
project to benefit the community.
Over 650 individuals have participated in Leadership 2000 since 1986. In
surveys conduced in 1992, 1997 and 2004, graduates have averaged one to
two community involvements prior to their participation in Leadership
2000. After completing the program, they averaged five community
involvements and one 'big' board position. Also, ninety percent of
Leadership 2000 graduates volunteer their time in the community. The
experiences provided by this special program have an impact not only on
the participants, but also on their organizations and their communities.
Participants are better informed, involved and more skilled in
leadership as a result of their participation in Leadership 2000. |
